Augustus Porter Papers, 1796 - 1875

This is an engraving of Augustus Porter, the second white settler in Niagara Falls. He was elected Judge and Postmaster for Niagara Falls, and was the primary surveyor for the City of Cleveland. With his brother, Peter B. Porter, they owned a large tract of land adjacent to the Niagara River between Black Rock and Niagara Falls. From this land they controlled the importation and exportation of goods along that tract before the construction of the Erie Canal. Peter Porter went on to fame in the War of 1812, and Porter Ave on Buffalo's West Side is named after him. This is a large collection of documents - 12 linear feet in all - and probably in the range of 4,000 documents from Augustus, Peter and descendants. The papers are housed at the Buffalo History Museum Library and Archives.

This is an example of one of the 12 folder files. Each folder contains anywhere from 10 - 25 letters or documents regarding family matters or business transactions.

Here is the first page of the finding aid. As you can see I am processing this collection to the Item Level, another way of saying I am reviewing each document and describing its' contents. In letter 100.201, the letter tabulates the financial and property losses that Peter Porter suffered during the War of 1812. This is similar to letter 100.005 at the top of the page where Augustus Porter makes a statement testifying to his losses during the War of 1812.

Here is a small collection of the various documents found. Letters, ledgers, bank account information make this a very diverse collection, even though every item is in the same format.

Here is another example of a business account ledger book from the company that Augustus and Peter Porter owned, along with two other associates. The name of the company was Porter, Barton and Co.
